A Big Decision
I have a big decision to make, and I have to make it by Monday. A company in Manchester has offered me a job. It is a wonderful opportunity, but it would mean leaving the town that I grew up in. I have felt nervous and excited at the same time for days.
The job itself sounds fantastic. It is exactly the kind of work that I have always wanted to do, and the salary is much better than the money that I earn now. If I take it, I will learn new skills and meet people who could help my career. One of my colleagues used to work in Manchester. She told me that the city was friendly and full of life, and she recommended a few areas that I might like.
However, there are disadvantages too. My flat here is cheap and familiar, and my family live only ten minutes away. If I lived in Manchester, I would miss our Sunday lunches together. I used to think that moving away would be easy, but now I am not so sure. I enjoy spending time with my friends here, and I honestly cannot imagine life without them.
Last night I discussed everything with my dad. He said that I should consider both sides carefully. He told me that he had had the same choice when he was young and that he had never regretted taking a risk. My mum said something different. She said that she would be grateful if I stayed, but she promised that she would support any decision that I made.
If I stayed here, I might ask my boss for more responsibility. I could also look for a different job in the area, although there are not many opportunities at the moment. If nothing changed, I would probably feel bored in a year. That is what worries me most.
Everyone has an opinion, of course. My best friend Kate said that I was mad even to think about staying. She persuaded me to write two lists, one of advantages and one of disadvantages. I was amazed to see that the list of advantages was much longer.
I keep changing my mind. In the morning I feel confident about going, and by the evening I want to stay. Perhaps the honest truth is that I will not be completely happy either way.
So what will I decide? I honestly do not know yet. When I eventually make my decision, I will write about it here. If you have ever had a similar choice, tell me in the comments. I am grateful for any advice.
